Laboratory of Inorganic Materials

Laboratory of Inorganic Materials is a structural unit in the Department of Chemical and Materials Technology. It has developed from the Laboratory of Mineral Fertilisers established by academician Mihkel Veiderma in 1965. Later, due to expansion and changes in the research area it was renamed to Laboratory of Inorganic Technology. Starting from 1992 the research group of the laboratory belonged to the Chair of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry and thereafter to its successor - Chair of Inorganic and General Chemistry. Due to reorganisation of the Department of Chemistry and formation of the Department of Natural Sciences in 2002, the research group joined the Institute of Chemical Engineering. Since December the 1st 2004 the laboratory exists again as an independent structural unit in the Department of Chemical and Materials Technology.

Research activities of the laboratory have been focused on the part of inorganic materials in the broad area of materials science. Its research covers chemistry and technology of inorganic materials, more specifically, fundamental and applied research of inorganic multicomponent systems in order to work out new innovative materials, to find application and new utilization methods for Estonian mineral resources, to diminish industrial wastes and to find possibilities for their reusing and environment-friendly storage.

The mission of the laboratory is to set up a national centre in this area. Task of the centre should be safekeeping of the national core competences, their development and exploitation to settle the future economical and educational problems of Estonian society.
